Anodizing Body Piercing Jewelry - Body Piercing Basics EP126

In the 126th episode of DaVo's Youtube series Body Piercing Basics, the topic is anodizing Titanium and Niobium body piercing jewelry and includes footage of jewelry being anodized.

Show Notes:

  • Niobium & Titanium Body Piercing Jewelry can be anodized

  • What happens

    • The material reacts to exposure to oxygen by forming a clear oxide layer on the surface

    • The Anodizing causes the reaction to go further to produce a thinker layer that interrupts the light waves.

    • The interference of the light waves is what creates the color

    • Will not change or add to the bio-compatible material.

  • Over 20 colors can be produced with the exception of Black and Red

  • Bath Method:

    • The electrolyte solution is created by mixing a phosphate-free soap, most commonly TSP-PF, and distilled water.

    • A negative cathode is made of thin titanium or surgical stainless steel submerged into the bath and connected to the Anodizer

    • An isolating plastic screen barrier is placed between the jewelry and the negative cathode. This is to avoid contact between the negative and positive cathodes.

    • The jewelry is placed into the bath

    • A positive cathode rod made of Titanium or SSS is attached to the Anodizer

    • The user puts on gloves made of an insulating material like latex

    • The Anodizer is turned on and the voltage is set usually at 12 or 14 volts to start the process.

    • Depending on the desired color, the volt is increased in steps until the desired color is achieved.

    • The jewelry is then rinsed and cleaned.
